the intended target. the father drove himself to the hospital and is expected to survive. his wife and child were in the car but were not injured. later that evening, police came across a vehicle that appeared to be driving drunk. we had two officers driving a black chevy tahoe. they were given extra patrol in their southern town when they came across this vehicle that appeared to be driving drunk. we pursued the vehicle all the way into oakland where it crashed on its own across the center median. threet occupants were taken to custody. >> police say they found weapons inside the car. they are now looking into a possible connection to that droif-by shooting residents in the san carlos area should be on alert. police have received a slew of reports on so-called door knock burglaries. burglars have been knocking on doors to see if people are home. if someone answers the door, they ask for directions or they ask some random questions. if no one answers, they break in. the sheriff's office is asking people to call 911 if they get suspicious door knocks and also

to report the suspect's description and the type of car they are driving. >> we are learning more about one of the victims gunned down at the quantico marine base in virginia. 19-year-old sarah castramato was from oakland. christie smith joins us live from where the victim went to high school. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. sarah castromato got some horrible news that she was one of the victims in the shooting. she attended liberty high school before joining the marines in libya. the suspected gunman is sergeant lopez from pacifica. he is a highly decorated marine that served in iraq and afghanistan before becoming a trainer. a tribute to 19-year-old lance corporal sarah castromato. she was raised in mexico and came to brentwood when she was

nine years old. she enjoyed working with children and volunteered with special needs kids in the high school, graduated with honors in 2011 and joined the marines and had won several medals, including the national defense service medal. investigators also sergeant lopez also killed corporal lance wooly. they told the contra costa times before this happened, they had no indication of trouble at the bay. reporting live, christie smith, "today in the bay." meteorologist, christina loren joining us to talk about the change in our forecast. some rain on the way. good morning to you. we have some fog out there this morning. want to point that out right off the bat. watch out for a quarter of a mile of visibility. that's all you have available in santa rosa right now. we are exipecting more fog.

road crews, that's what's causing the slowing there. the traffic flow as you are traveling out of the tri valley, no problems in your commute direction there. for 580 at 880 and 580 eastbound, road crews that should be clearing livermore out of dublin. a live look across the bay. san francisco bridge, moving smoothly. that tips over towards half moon bay where you will find highway one as well as our own bob redell. there are some changes out there. what is the deal with? >> at 11:00 a.m. will be the ribbon cutting on the devil's slide tunnel, the tom lantos tunnel named after the late congressman that pushed very hard for this project. we are on the north end of the

tunnel. you are going to have two tunnels, one northbound, one southbound, 4200 feet long, 30-feet wide. this is the result of a $439 million project that's been going on for quite some time. it is significant not only for the bay area but the state of california. this is the first tunnel project that's been completed in nearly 50 years. the last one was the third bore of the calicot tunnel in the '60s. it was designed to be a bypass for highway one at devil's slide. we have been reporting this over the years. mike, you are familiar with this unfortunately. how many times there have been rock slides that have shut down the road basically cutting off pacifica from half moon bay and unfortunately, a lot of injuries and fatalities, people going off that very dangerous stretch of roadway. later today will be the ribbon cutting on the tom lantos tunnel. they should be open to traffic later tonight.

the dow finished the fifth consecutive week higher. the s&p 500 gained 11 and the nasdaq added 22 points. it also looked like the gains from friday will continue today. futures are up across the board are optimistic to shut down the cyprus bailout. they will be transferred to the bank. they are not ensured under eu laws. still, good news for the market there. >> kayla, thank you much. a couple of debuts over the weekend. the new blackberry z-10 hit at&t with a thud. this was supposed to be the phone that saved blackberry. initial sales seem slow. this is just anecdotally. no numbers have been released. verizon starts selling this phone at the end of the month. what did fairly well was the

croos, the animated movie made by dreamworks. they needed a win. it's previous film, "rise of the guardians" bombed. they are working on making movies more quickly, turning out more per year at a cheaper price so they don't runt into it again. if they do have a bomb, it is out the door, it was done and it was cheap and they move on. >> and you almost don't hear about it. >> yes. take a look at this new video out of moscow this morning. the russian capitol covered in snow. the city is joking today is the 55th day of february. causing massive traffic and flight to be canceled. a third of what they usually get in march all came down in just 24 hours. more snowfall to come.

north north of the bay area. a stray shower tomorrow morning. your tuesday, late into wednesday. maybe a few more showers. this is kind of a general pattern. it is really hard to pinpoint when and where we are going to see the showers. it will be very spotty and isolated as well. we are really having a hard time dictating the active time period. what i can tell you is, right now, wednesday and sunday look to be the heaviest. if you want to plan around that, easter egg hunts, maybe better in the afternoon, let me show you what i'm talking about, 69 for today in livermore. tuesday, a stray a.m. shower wednesday. a few sprinkles, specially in the afternoon hours. thursday and friday, same deal. maybe an isolated shower or two. saturday to sunday, things change. we get more of a moisture rich cloud cover. on and off showers early sunday. should clear out by late supd afternoon. overall, you want to keep the umbrella handy tuesday through sunday. we will keep you posted as we get more and more model data.

back to you, marla and laura. no, mike is going to take it from here. over here towards 880/280, the interchange has cleared. we had some slowing in the area around the interchange. you saw the light volume of traffic as the road crews start to move. we see that change. there is no problems. 880, 17, 280, the northbound route throughout the south bay, all fine. a little slowing into downtown san jose. we'll move the maps. we do see the build coming out of the tri valley. the altamont pass, slow. vasco road, pretty typical build. no issues through livermore. 84 southbound, we have some slowing on isabelle coming down through the city.

about all of this, specially being on sports center. >> how heartbreak can for that mother. he was hit by his cousin who spun out of control in a race car during a warmup lap. a 68-year-old man was also killed in that accident. 5:20. a new tribute for the victims of a deadly san bruno pipe explosion. the dedication took place at bethany church. 3 of the 8 people killed ntd blast were members of that church's congregation. community members painted the mural depicting the phoenix rising from the ashes. healing waters and a rainbow of hope. survivors have continued to press for pipeline safety reforms. it is 5:21. coming up, why the man many in the bay area know as mr. road

expected. the glass, originally planned for the exterior of the center was going to cost an extra $7.5 million to meet safety guidelines. to cut costs, project officials are proposing using a perforated metal that would act and look very similar to the glass metals. the board of directors still need to approve the changes doctors are putting the brakes on mr. road show for now. in his mercury news column, he explains how his doctor told him he couldn't drive a car for six to eight months. richards was diagnosed with charcot foot, a disease that can sometimes cause bones in the feet to deteriorate. he was given a special boot and a walker and told not to walk for six to eight months as well. the 61-year-old has been covering bay area roadways for 22 years. he knows them inside and out and won't be driving them. >> we wish him well. >> very much so. we hope you enjoy the

good morning to you. it is 5:30. i'm marla tallez in for jon kelley. >> the supreme court will hear a multibillion dollar case between the drug industry and federal regulators. high courts will weigh in on the pay for delay deal where large pharmaceutical companies pay generic drug companies to keep the lower cost products off the market for the long as possible. the obama administration says it undermines consumers by denying them low cost alternatives. brand name drugs add $3.5 billion annually to the cost of the drug. >> a start of a big week for the supreme court. tomorrow, the justices will hear arguments over proposition 8. on wednesday, they will argue about the legality of the

defense of marriage act. the supreme court will hear a challenge to california's proposition 8 tomorrow and on wednesday, it will hear challenges to the defensive marriage act. now, in washington, d.c., outside of the supreme court, people have been camping out for days for a chance to witness history. justices are considering whether to strike down two laws that limit the rights of same-sex couples. the first is the challenge to california's prop 8 which defines marriage as being between one man and one woman. nine states and washington, d.c. allow same-sex marriage. 38 states ban it. the second case challenges the defensive marriage act which blocks federal recognition of gay couples in the states that are allowed to marry. >> to exclude gay people from the institution of marriage is to restrict their liberty. >> the institution of marriage and marriage laws are designed to attach mothers and fathers to

each other and the children they may raise in the best environment. >> president obama called doma, the defense of marriage act unconstitutional. house republicans are defending it. a challenge to prop 8, a couple from the bay area, chris perry and sandy sterry and another couple from burbank are named plaintiffs in the case. it is us pekts the ruling is expected to come down sometime in july. the coast guard will decide whether to resume the search for a missing 22-year-old man that vanished while swimming in the ocean. we toent roosevelt beach to play soccer and swim with some friends. went into the water and disappeared. the coast guard spent all night searching but they didn't find him. he worked at gin wan chinese

restaurant. the owner says she considers him her own son. >> he is very, very good kid, very, very good kid. he hard working. he school. he working. >> the coast guard called off that search overnight. again, they will decide this morning whether to resume looking for lopez. >> 5:33. new this morning, the teenager is fighting for his life after an overnight stabbing in richmond. this morning, the suspect that slashed him is still on the loose. investigators tell us the teen was stabbed on marina way and metro walkway just before midnight. right now, he is in critical condition at a nearby hospital. police tell us it is just too early to tell if the stabbing is gang-related. so far, investigators have not released any specific information about a possible suspect or suspects. >> we are learning more this morning about bay area marine, sarah castromata, one of the marines shot to death at the

quantico training base last week. christie smith joins us live in redwood where the victim went to high school. >> reporter: her parents are expected to fly to washington, d.c. sometime this week to bring their daughter home. they got the horrible news on friday she was one of the victims of the quantico shooting. a highly decorated marine that served in iraq and afghanistan before becoming a trainer. there is a tribute to lance corporal sarah castromato who is from oakland. she moved here at age nine from mexico, enjoyed working with children and volunteered with special needs kid while at liberty high school, graduated in 2011 and enlisted in the marines that same year. just 19 years old and although she had not deployed, she was already awarded four medals.

investigators say that sergeant lopez also killed corporal jacob wooly of mississippi. nbc news is reporting the three may have had some sort of romantic entanglement. there was no indication, they said, of trouble at the base. east bay special forces soldier has died from wounds he received in afghanistan. the 31-year-old sergeant first glass james grissom from hayward died thursday at a military hospital from wounds he suffered two days earlier in afghanistan. he was part of a special forces unit based in fort lewis washington on his fifth deploit overseas. he graduated from mt. eden high school in hayward in 1999 and the art institute in san francisco. a stretch of highway one gets a bit safer today. crews have finished work on the two new tunnels that will bypass

devils slide near pacifica. bob redell live out there this morning where the tunnels will officially be opened later this morning. good morning, bob. >> reporter: it is ribbon cutting at 11:00 a.m. and the tunnels should be open by tonight, if not tonight, tomorrow morning. we are going to throw up a map to give you a sense of where we are at along the san mateo coastline. this tunnel will connect po sie pacifica with half moon bay. this is a quarter mile stretch that runs along the coastline. this will now bypass these tunnels that are going to be opening today. a $439 million project. two tunnels. 4200 feet long. 30 feet wide. this is significant for the state of california, the first tunnel project to be completed in roughly 50 years. the last one was in the east bay. these are called the tom lantos

tunnels, named after the late congressman that pushed hard for this project. devils slide has been very treacherous as we've been mentioning since it has been around for almost 75 years. treacherous because of the rock slides that have shut down the road. it has caused a major problem for people trying to get from half moon bay in pacifica. it has been dangerous in the sense there have been a lot of people hurt and killed with cars going off the edge into the rocks below along the surf. again, 11:00 a.m. ribbon cutting today for a $439 million project that's been years in the making, finally going to be coming to an end today. it will be opening tonight, if not tonight, sometime tomorrow morning. reporting live along the san mateo coastline, bob redell, "today in the bay." as a little girl, i was always afraid to drive across devils slide. i am happy to see that. i have to tell you, i made my kids ride with me on devil's slide yesterday. beautiful weather.

i wanted to take one of the last trips along the coastline. i gave my wife the camera and we got some nice pictures along the way of the dashboard and the windshield. 92 will continue over to the coast. we are focusing on your major commute. building westbound with the headlights. a smooth drive down along the peninsula. 101, nice easy drive. southbound with the taillights, northbound with the headlights. building the volume. not losing any speed. all the way there to san mateo and san francisco. if you are heading south, the south bay. northbound, nice, easy drive as well. traveling around the area as more folks hit the road. we are seeing south 880 stick around for a bit. the construction crews we saw at the 280/880 interchange.

jurors are asking to overturn the acquittal of amanda knox and her roommate. knox and her ex-boyfriend were

originally convicted for murder for the death of knox's roommate in 2007. that conviction was overturned in 2011 when it was revealed that police made several mistakes and compromised evidence in the investigation. prosecutors now want that ruling overturned. the court is expected to make a decision later today. also new this morning, u.s. secretary of state, john kerry, is in afghanistan today on an unannounced visit to see president hamid karzai. his visit coincides with the handover of a u.s.-controlled prison to the afghan government. the military base in bagram is the only prison in afghanistan under u.s. control. they reached a deal to transfer control of the prison while ensuring dangerous prisoners would not be released president obama and the first lady will mark the beginning of passover tonight at the white house. the jewish holiday begins tonight at dusk. the first family will host the

slowing there. south 880 through hayward, still close to the limit. that's great news. one of the early signs for the east bay build. a quick look at the bay bridge toll plaza. some cash lanes backing up. maybe not all the cash lanes are open. getting close to 6:00, one more lane open and traffic start to east up here. no problems to the east shore freeways. smooth drive. we will get you details oen that, guys. back to you. police in southern california say a 9-year-old girl walked about a mile to find help after surviving a car crash that killed her father. the crash happened just after 2:30 on sunday morning on a rural stretch of the sierra highway in acton. the girl walked rugged terrain and wondered into a commuter rail station and told a security guard she had been involved in an auto accident. the officers found a man in his 30s had been killed. police say alcohol may have played a factor in that crash.

south san francisco police are on the lookout for a serial arsonist that started three fires on saturday night. police say two fires were lit in orange memorial park. a third fire was found a few blocks away on ponderosa road on el camino real near the golf club. all three fires were quickly put out and caused very little damage. >> they have not identified the suspect. >> indian spiritual leader vavi shankar is on his way to southern california. known as the ambassador of peace, he launched his u.s. campaign yesterday. he spoke in front of a crowd of more than 1500 people saying it is time to address the issues of growing violence in our communities caused by disconnect between neighbors. we are so much keblthed through the internet and social media but people to people connection, heart to heart connection is essential today.

"today in the bay's" arturo santiago is in the newsroom with what's ahead on the fight over gay marriage both sides of this debate are finally getting their day in the court arguing in front of the supreme court of the united states. the court will hear a challenge to prop 8 which defines marriage as between one man and one woman. that challenge will be heard tomorrow. people, as you have said, have been camping outside the supreme court for days trying to get a seat to get in. back in 2004, then mayor of san francisco, gavin newsom ordered them to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. six months later, they invalidated same-sex unions. four years later, the same state supreme court overturned california's ban on same-sex marriage. that ruling was short lived as voters passed proposition 8. tomorrow, supporters and opponents of same-sex marriage
